Jim Moriarty's hippie house

MOFFAT! Hi. I'm a Whovian at heart, with lots of other fandoms thrown in. Read my about page for more, I guess. Send me an ask (off anon) for links to my other blogs or my Facebook :) Be lucky.

Spamming you with my thoughts.

You know The Shakespeare Code? This is pretty much my favourite episode ever. Maybe it’s not the best written story ever, maybe The End Of Time is more emotional, or Silence in the Library has a better plot line, but I think that episode is so clever, and so underrated.

Why?

There’s Ten/Martha’s relationship, Ten/Shakespeare’s relationship, the very fact that fucking Shakespeare’s in it (I am such a huge Shakespeare fangirl), Martha/Shakey’s relationship and all the tiny little Shakespeare conspiracy theories in it.

He refers to The Doctor as “a man so young” and obviously to Martha as a dark woman (ie “Queen of Afrique”). If you know anything about Shakespeare’s sonnets you’ll know that most academics believe his first 126 were about a young man. At first the sonnets seem to be focussing on friendship, but they soon lead into the realms of romance (which is implied by his mad flirting with The Doctor - “Come on, we can all have a good flirt later!” “Is that a promise, Doctor?” “Oh, fifty-seven academics just punched the air…”).

Then his next 25 are to a Dark Lady. They are romantic, in fact they are sometimes described as overtly sexual. How is Shakespeare with Martha? Just a little bit pervy. It is thought that he loved her but was attracted to the man. Think of how much respect (and obvious attraction) he had for The Doctor? It is also believed the Young Man and the Dark Woman had a relationship of their own… oh look, that’s canon.

Of course, Doctor Who goes against this slightly by having Shakespeare dedicated Sonnet 18 to Martha, which should technically be a Doctor sonnet…

But I love their relationships. Martha and The Doctor gain trust, friendship and knowledge of each other. The character development of Martha is immense in this episode. I love The Doctor and Shakespeare. They both know so much about each other and I love how they have portrayed it as though they truly consider each other as geniuses. I truly think they would have loved each other if the situation ever really arose. And I love Shakey and Martha for the pure, unadulterated hilarity. I also love the subtle little hints to modern day, especially the Harry Potter series.

BOOM!

I know these are all already established conspiracies related to the episode, but I felt the need to reiterate them. I think this episode is so clever. And it’s so beautiful, and so complex, and so underrated! So, there you go.

so, in short:
